Modeling source-tract interaction in speech production: Voicing onset vs. vowel height after a voiceless obstruent

چکیده
This paper shows that observed higher values of intraoral pressure at voicing onset of higher vowels vs. low vowels might be consequence of the acoustical coupling between the vocal fold oscillation and the vocal tract. The acoustical coupling is characterized by a simple model based on a lumped description of tissue mechanics, quasi-steady flow and one dimensional acoustics. The model predicts a “U”-shaped relation between the transglottal pressure at voicing onset and the ratio of voice fundamental frequency to the first formant, which reproduces the data with good approximation.

Effects of consonant manner and vowel height on intraoral pressure and articulatory contact at voicing offset and onset for voiceless obstruents.
In obstruent consonants, a major constriction in the upper vocal tract yields an increase in intraoral pressure (P(io)). Phonation requires that subglottal pressure (P(sub)) exceed P(io) by a threshold value, so as the transglottal pressure reaches the threshold, phonation will cease. This work investigates how P(io) levels at phonation offset and onset vary before and after different German vo...
متن کاملThe interaction of coarticulation and prosody in sound change.
Ohala (1974, 1981a) has proposed that sound changes can originate in hearers' misinterpretations of synchronic phonetic patterns. This paper applies this idea to sound changes that are conditioned by the prosodic environment, such as the voicing of voiceless fricatives in unstressed syllables in Proto-Germanic. Browman and Goldstein's (1989, 1990) "gestural score" suggests a representation of s...
متن کاملPerception of VOT and First Formant Onset by Spanish and English Speakers
Many languages exhibit a voicing distinction with two series of stops, voiced and voiceless, which differ primarily in the relative timing between the consonantal release and the onset of laryngeal vibration, known as voice onset time (VOT) (Lisker and Abramson, 1964). While the exact implementation of VOT for the voicing contrast differs among languages, long lag VOTs, with a long delay betwee...
متن کاملACOUSTIC CHARACTERIZATION OF THE VOICING OF STOP PHONES IN BRAZILIAN PORTUGUESE Caracterização acústica da sonoridade dos fones plosivos do português brasileiro
Purpose: to investigate and compare the acoustic characteristics of voiceless and voiced plosives in the speech of children with typical phonological development and adults with typical language speech patterns. Method: the study’s sample is arranged in two groups – 17 adults and 11 children with typical phonological development. Through words/pseudowords ([‘papa], [‘baba], [‘tata], [‘dada], [‘...
متن کاملLaryngeal Activity in Icelandic
Laryngeal activity in the production of voiceless obstruents and obstruent clusters in Icelandic was investigated by the combined techniques of transillumination and fiberoptic filming of the larynx. Contrasts of preaspirated , unaspirated, and postaspirated voiceless stops were found to be produced basically by differences in laryngeal-oral timing. During clusters of voiceless obstruents, one ...
